Looking for some beautiful, whimsical books?
4 Book Reviews from one of my favorite daughters.
At the time of the publishing of this blog post we have all four of these books and would be glad to have you come and claim one. When we don’t have them anymore, you can hunt for them online, in the library, or at another excellent bookstore. I loved her description of these, and am going to try to read The Secret Letter before it gets snatched-up!
Lost in a Book
by Jennifer Donnelly
Hidden in the beast’s library is a very mysterious book. Belle is about to discover it and visit a fascinating new world. But is everything as it seems? Will Belle be able to find her way home? Or will the story take hold, and never let her go?
This book was especially intriguing, seeing as these were characters we already knew, and wondering what new adventures awaited. The emotions were very well portrayed as well as the characters. The portrayal of Love and Death as characters was really well done and made for a very intriguing read.
The Secret Letter
by Mary Blount Christian
On the coast of Maine lies the charming town of Somerset Harbor, Maggie’s new home after inheriting Sedgwick Manor from her aunt along with an antique shop and a mystery. Maggie and the lively members of the historical society set out to unravel said mystery and discover shocking secrets and heartwarming truths that have been hidden in these relics of the past.
This was a really enjoyable book, at some moments it had me wanting to cuddle up by the fireplace with my cat, and at others wondering waiting with eager excitement to finish dinner so I could go see what would happen next. This book was very well written and thought out. The atmosphere and characters were really well set up and the emotions felt very real.
13 Treasures
by Michelle Harrison
Tanya can see fairies, but the fairies she sees are not the ones we imagine. Evil fairies, they cast spells on her, waking her up at night and propelling her from her bed. At wits end with her daughter’s unusual behavior, Tanya’s mother sends her to Elvesden Manor, her grandmother’s secluded countryside estate. Fifty years ago a girl vanished in the woods surrounding the mansion, and as Tanya learns more about the mystery, she finds herself dangerously close to vanishing into the fairy realm forever.
I really liked this book because it satisfied my fantasy needs whilst partially being in the real world which was really interesting. The plot twists were incredible as well as the straining of friendships and trust. The characters were very well written and I also love the cover art.
When the Butterflies Came
by Kimberley Griffiths Little
This is a book about a young girl named Tara Doucet, whose Grandmother had just passed away and life seems down with her and her sister Riley not being able to agree on anything, and her mother depressed and distant. One day a strange thing happens, her grandmother’s butler comes along with a letter from her grandmother. She and her sister come to live in her grandmother’s old mansion, where she finds a trail of letters and keys, along with a strange assortment of dazzling and mysterious butterflies.
Letter by letter she is led to the beautiful islands of Chuuk, where she discovers the most astounding secret of all.
I enjoyed this book a lot because of the way that the author keeps you questioning motives and suspects, and also keeping the plot unpredictable. The book was really well done and the descriptions were beautiful
